What are cherry angiomas?

Cherry angiomas — sometimes called Campbell de Morgan spots or red moles — are small, benign growths made up of clusters of tiny blood vessels (capillaries) near the surface of the skin. They appear as bright red, cherry-coloured spots and can be completely flat, slightly raised, or dome-shaped.

They are one of the most common skin growths in adults. Most people develop at least a few by the time they reach their 30s or 40s, and they tend to become more numerous with age. They can appear anywhere on the body, though the trunk, arms and shoulders are particularly common sites.

Cherry angiomas are completely harmless and pose no health risk. They do not develop into skin cancer and are not contagious. However, many people find them cosmetically bothersome — especially when they appear in visible areas such as the face, neck or chest, or when they grow in clusters.

The exact cause is not fully understood, but genetics, hormonal changes and ageing all appear to play a role. They can occasionally bleed if scratched or caught on clothing, which is another reason some clients choose to have them removed.

How we treat cherry angiomas

We use clinical-grade Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) delivered through a precision pen-like device to freeze each cherry angioma with pinpoint accuracy. The extreme cold destroys the cluster of blood vessels that form the spot, causing the angioma to shrink and disappear.

Treatment takes just seconds per spot. The Nitrous Oxide is applied directly to the angioma in a brief, controlled burst. You may feel a short cold sensation or very mild sting, but most clients describe the discomfort as minimal — no anaesthetic is required.

After treatment, the spot may darken slightly and form a small crust or scab. This is a completely normal part of the healing process. The crust typically falls off naturally within 1–2 weeks, revealing clear, smooth skin beneath.

For most cherry angiomas, a single session is all that is needed. Larger or more prominent spots may occasionally benefit from a follow-up treatment, but this is relatively uncommon. Multiple spots can often be treated in a single appointment.

Every treatment begins with a free consultation where we assess the area, confirm the spots are cherry angiomas, explain the process and answer your questions — so you feel completely informed and comfortable before we begin.

Frequently asked questions

Does cherry angioma removal hurt?

Most clients describe it as a brief, mild cold sensation that lasts only a few seconds. The discomfort is very minimal and no anaesthetic is needed. Many clients are surprised by how quick and painless the treatment is.

How many sessions will I need?

Most cherry angiomas are successfully treated in a single session. Larger or more raised angiomas may occasionally require a follow-up treatment, but this is uncommon. If you have multiple spots, we can usually treat several in the same appointment.

Will the cherry angioma come back after treatment?

Once a cherry angioma has been successfully treated and has healed, it does not return in the same location. However, because cherry angiomas are a natural part of ageing, new ones may develop elsewhere on the body over time.

Is there any scarring or downtime?

There is no downtime — you can return to your normal activities immediately. The treated area may form a small scab that falls off within 1–2 weeks. Scarring is very rare with cryotherapy. Most clients are left with clear, smooth skin once healing is complete.

Can you treat cherry angiomas on the face?

Yes. Cryotherapy is suitable for cherry angiomas on the face and other sensitive areas. The precision of the Nitrous Oxide device allows us to target each spot individually without affecting the surrounding skin. We will assess the area at your free consultation and confirm whether treatment is appropriate.
