What are age spots?
Age spots — also known as sun spots, liver spots or solar lentigines — are flat, brown or tan patches of pigmentation that develop on skin that has had years of sun exposure. They are most common on the face, hands, arms and décolletage.
They form when melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, clusters together in response to cumulative ultraviolet light. While age spots are completely harmless and benign, many people find them cosmetically bothersome, particularly when they appear on visible areas like the face or backs of the hands.
