What are age spots?

Age spots — also known as sun spots, liver spots or solar lentigines — are flat, brown or tan patches of pigmentation that develop on skin that has had years of sun exposure. They are most common on the face, hands, arms and décolletage.

They form when melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, clusters together in response to cumulative ultraviolet light. While age spots are completely harmless and benign, many people find them cosmetically bothersome, particularly when they appear on visible areas like the face or backs of the hands.

  • Flat brown or tan patches, often with clearly defined edges
  • Most commonly found on the face, hands, arms and chest
  • Caused by cumulative sun exposure over many years
  • Harmless but often a cosmetic concern for clients
  • Can vary in size from a few millimetres to over a centimetre

Age spots do not require treatment for medical reasons, but if they affect your confidence or you simply want clearer, more even skin, cryotherapy offers a fast and effective solution.

How we treat age spots

We use Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) delivered through a precision cryotherapy pen to apply a brief, controlled freeze directly to each age spot. The treatment targets only the pigmented cells, leaving surrounding skin unaffected.

After treatment, the spot typically darkens over the following days as the damaged pigment rises to the surface. Over the next one to three weeks, the darkened layer crusts and flakes away naturally, revealing clearer skin beneath.

  • Treatment takes just seconds per spot — quick and well-tolerated
  • The pigment darkens, then crusts and flakes off naturally
  • No cutting, no stitches, no anaesthetic required
  • Darker or larger spots may need two or more sessions for even fading
  • Multiple spots can often be treated in a single appointment

Every treatment begins with a thorough consultation where we assess the area, explain what to expect, and confirm that cryotherapy is the right approach for your skin.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about age spot removal with cryotherapy.

What causes age spots?
Age spots (solar lentigines) are caused by years of sun exposure. Ultraviolet light accelerates melanin production, and over time this pigment clusters into flat brown patches — most commonly on the face, hands, arms and décolletage. They tend to become more prominent with age, which is why they are sometimes called "liver spots," although they have nothing to do with the liver.
Are age spots dangerous?
Age spots are completely benign and not harmful. However, any new, changing or irregular pigmented mark should be assessed by a healthcare professional to rule out other conditions such as melanoma. We always visually assess the area before treatment and will refer you to your GP or dermatologist if we have any concerns.
How many sessions will I need?
Many age spots respond well to a single cryotherapy session. However, darker or larger spots may require two or more treatments spaced a few weeks apart for complete, even fading. We will give you an honest assessment at your consultation so you know what to expect.
Can you treat multiple age spots in one appointment?
Yes. Several spots can usually be treated during a single visit, which is particularly convenient for clients with sun damage across the hands, face or chest. The number of spots we can address in one session will be discussed at your consultation, and pricing may be adjusted for multiple areas.
Will the age spots come back after treatment?
Treated spots should not return once the pigment has been successfully removed. However, ongoing sun exposure can cause new age spots to develop over time. We strongly recommend daily SPF 30+ sunscreen on exposed areas to protect your results and prevent further pigmentation from forming.
